Maybe about 10 yrs ago, I was playing music for a lot of different people in California. But sometime after my 24th B-day I just suddenly stopped and didn't really feel any real motivation to continue playing. And to be clear, I still played music for different people, I just stopped writing music and growing as a musician and writer. But in 2011, I started to slowly feel a change in my desire to play, I think it was because I ordered Netflix and begin watching Anime (Manga) all the time, because then I became introduced to different types of music from Japan.
Yoko Kanno is a composer for a lot of the anime shows that I watch and I've been rather impressed by the large range of styles she enjoys writing and composing for the shows, but I've always been motivated to learn the different instruments that are used to write some wonderful pieces of music. She has written jazz, classical, orchestral, electronic, new age, blues, folk rock, electronic rock, pop, and art rock. And I've been literally drawn towards these genres of music, and it isn't that I haven't heard all these genres of music before. I just became very conflicted about which one I had to stay primarily drawn to, and then I allowed myself to embrace many forms of music. Allowed myself to branch out and expand my musical interest in another new direction. And I think the hard part was that when I grew up, I playing nothing but Gospel, R&B, and Jazz music... while on the side I loved mainly electronic rock, metal, and Jazz. Yet, I know deep down within my core I want to be a very well rounded musician that is capable of playing different forms of music and instruments. I'd love to visit Japan and just soak in the culture and the music. But for now, I guess I could simply sit back, soak in the music... and learn different forms of Art Rock and just embrace it with all of my heart.
Currently, I'm watching Darker Than Black, and its a great anime.
